As The Libertine transitions into the amber cast afternoons of autumn, we enthusiastically unveil the highly anticipated collection of stories that compose our second exclusive series here on The Zine: The Fall Flight. For the first installment in the series, The Libertine is honored to bring you another collaboration with one of our favorite lens masters, Akila Berjaoui.
Since foundation of The Libertine in 2009, Akila‘s work has been a constant source of inspiration and motivation in developing our own publication! The freedom, feminine idolatry and sensual revelry communicated through out her work, embodies our sybaritic philosophy here at The Libertine.
For our latest story, ‘Heartbreak Hotel’, Akila‘s Casting Director, Simone Hush, designated Libertine favorite, Jessica Sikosek, to portray the jilted bride that finds respite for her broken heart on the glistening beaches of the Italian Riviera. Adorned in edgy yet feminine looks created by stylist Amy Bannerman, Jess is every bit the ‘jilted bride’ turned ‘blissed out babe on the rebound’. Amy’s sultry vision was tangibly enhanced by the accompanying hair/beauty looks; expertly envisioned and executed by beauty pro, Helena Lyons. For the finishing touches on the editorial, the fabulous Madeline Carroll designed the illustrations for our cover; fierce and fresh!
As she always does, Akila formed a playful bond of friendship with her subject; allowing a natural emergence of gaiety and beauty throughout the vivid images. It is the youthful aura and unapologetic sass to Akila‘s work, that has us so enchanted with her here at The Libertine. She somehow, never fails to see the extraordinary in the quotidian…and for that Ms. Berjaoui has our unending admiration and adulation.
